What is Matrescence? Understanding the Transition into Motherhood

Written by Megan Dennis

Motherhood is often described as magical, beautiful, and fulfilling. But rarely do we talk about how messy, transformative, and complex it can truly feel. Enter matrescence; the missing word in our motherhood vocabulary. At Blissful Bebe, we hold space for mothers navigating this sacred shift. Whether you’re cradling a newborn, adjusting to life with a toddler, or still carrying the emotional imprints of birth, this journey deserves to be seen, felt, and supported.

When a child is born, so is the mother. A lot of people put focus on the newborn baby being brought into the world. Yes, this is of deep and great importance; but so is the care and attention for the mother who has birthed her own baby.

I feel it is important that society recognizes and validates what a transformation a woman goes through physically, mentally and emotionally. It is to be embraced the changes that she has gone through and her journey through matrescence is to be celebrated and is a normal rhythmic motion of motherhood to be supported and nurtured.

What Is Matrescence?

Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother — emotionally, hormonally, physically, socially, and spiritually.

Coined by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael (yes, the same woman who gave us the word doula), matrescence is similar to adolescence: it’s a powerful and often uncomfortable transition marked by growth, identity shifts, and deep inner questioning.

It’s not a moment. It’s a season — and sometimes a lifetime.

For generations motherhood has been framed as a role, not a transformation.

We’re taught to focus on the baby — not on the woman who birthed them. But just as a baby is born, so is a mother. And she too needs tending, nurturing, and validation as she redefines who she is.

The Emotional Landscape of Matrescence

During matrescence, you might feel:

• A deep love for your baby and a longing for your old self.

• Grief for your independence, even while feeling joy.

• Overwhelm in the stillness.

• Identity confusion — “Who am I now?”

• A clash between who you were, who you are, and who you want to be.

None of this means you’re failing. It means you’re becoming.

Honouring the Journey at Blissful Bebe

At Blissful Bebe, we believe that the mother needs to be held too.

Our services — from baby massage to mother care consults along with our scared mama circles — are designed to support you through matrescence by:

• Bringing you back to your body through the nurturing power of touch.

• Creating space to bond with your baby, heart-to-heart.

• Guiding you back to yourself, gently and without pressure.

This transition isn’t about “bouncing back.” It’s about growing forward — into a more expanded, compassionate version of yourself.

Matrescence Is Not Postnatal Depression (But They Can Coexist)

It’s important to note: matrescence is not a mental illness. It is a normal and healthy transition — though it can sometimes trigger deeper emotional challenges.

If you’re feeling persistently low, anxious, or detached, please reach out to your GP, midwife, or maternal health nurse. You deserve support.

You Are Not Alone, Mama. Every mother you pass in the park, at the shops, or in your mother’s group is walking her own version of this journey.

If you’re nodding your head or holding back tears reading this — we see you. Blissful Bebe is here to walk beside you with gentle hands and an open heart.
